Keep an eye out for special features in your home, and try to preserve them where you can. Snagging a matching furniture set can be an easy way to outfit your space. But if your goal is to craft a dynamic interior, consider pairing items that don’t match perfectly. “You don’t need to make big changes to make a room look different,” Zoe Warren, design consultant at HomeHow, says.
When decorating, remember that you don’t need to outfit every single corner. “Negative space, or blank walls, are needed to rest the eyes and mind,” Pam Faulkner, interior redesigner and owner of Faulkner House Interior Redesign, says. “When you walk in, the sights you see should be welcoming to you and your guest,” Joe Cangelosi, interior designer and owner of Joe Cangelosi Design, says.
Cork is all the rage as of late, and it’s not hard to see why. The material is multiuse and adds just the proper texture and dimension in the right room. It’s perfect for damp environs like Miami (where this cork-covered bedroom by Charlap Hyman and Herrero lives). Designing a home, though no doubt excruciating at moments, is an amazing opportunity to flex your creative muscles. Any house or apartment, whether a new build or a historic property, comes with its own sets of quirks. The trick is to see these details as opportunities rather than road blocks.
When hanging art, laying out your furniture, and displaying décor, be sure to play with height. Pair taller items with shorter items, and switch up the placement of wall décor. When decorating, break down the room into a few different layers. Your base layer should include your biggest furniture—the pieces you’ll take with you from home to home.
